Carthage

Carthage was an ancient city located in present-day Tunisia, founded by Phoenician traders around 814 BCE. It became a powerful maritime and commercial empire, rivaling Rome. Carthage is best known for its conflicts with Rome during the Punic Wars, especially under the leadership of Hannibal, who famously crossed the Alps to invade Italy. Despite its military prowess and wealth, Carthage was eventually defeated by Rome in 146 BCE, leading to its destruction. The city was later rebuilt and became an important center in the Roman Empire, illustrating its lasting historical significance in the Mediterranean region.
