Dido (mythological queen)

Dido is a prominent figure in ancient mythology, particularly in Roman and Phoenician tales. She was the founder and queen of Carthage, a powerful city in North Africa. According to legend, Dido fled her brother, who had killed her husband, and established Carthage using her ingenuity. Dido is most famously known from Virgil's "Aeneid," where she falls in love with the Trojan hero Aeneas. Their passionate love story ends in tragedy when Aeneas leaves her to fulfill his destiny, leading Dido to take her own life out of heartbreak, symbolizing themes of love, loss, and the struggles of fate.
