It was the destination of the Prophet Muhammad's migration (Hijra) from Mecca in 622 CE and became the first city to embrace Islam, establishing a community based on its teachings. The mosque in Medina, known as Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, houses the Prophet's tomb and is a major pilgrimage site for Muslims. Medina is also noted for its contributions to Islamic scholarship and governance during the early years of the Islamic community.
