Simla Agreement

The Simla Agreement, signed in July 1972 between India and Pakistan, aimed to establish peaceful relations after the 1971 war that led to the creation of Bangladesh. The agreement emphasized resolving disputes through dialogue and acknowledged the Line of Control in Kashmir as a de facto border. Both countries committed to respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It sought to promote bilateral cooperation and prevent escalation of conflicts. The Simla Agreement is significant as it laid the groundwork for future negotiations between India and Pakistan, albeit with mixed results over the years.
