Indira Gandhi

Indira Gandhi was the first female Prime Minister of India, serving from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. Known for her strong leadership, she implemented significant policies such as the Green Revolution, which modernized Indian agriculture. However, her tenure also faced criticism for authoritarianism, particularly during the Emergency (1975-1977), when civil liberties were suspended. Indira Gandhi remains a complex figure in Indian history, recognized for her contributions and controversial decisions that shaped the country's political landscape.
