Peshwa

The Peshwa was the title given to the Prime Minister of the Maratha Empire in India during the 18th century. The Peshwa held significant power, often acting as the de facto leader of the empire, especially as the Mughal influence waned. The most notable Peshwas, like Baji Rao I and Madhav Rao I, expanded the empire and managed its administration. While initially appointed by the Chhatrapati (the royal leader), the Peshwa's influence grew to the point where they could overshadow the monarchy. The position played a crucial role in shaping the Maratha legacy in Indian history.
