Myanmar, also known as Burma, is a Southeast Asian country bordered by Thailand, Laos, China, India, and Bangladesh. It has a rich cultural heritage influenced by Buddhism, with diverse ethnic groups and languages. The capital city is Naypyidaw, but Yangon (Rangoon) is the largest city and a key economic center. Myanmar gained independence from British rule in 1948 but has faced political turmoil, including military rule and ethnic conflicts. In recent years, it has experienced significant changes, including attempts towards democracy and ongoing humanitarian challenges, particularly involving the Rohingya minority.
