Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo
Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo are two Myanmar journalists who gained international attention after being arrested in December 2017. They were working for Reuters and were investigating the Rohingya crisis, which involved violence and persecution against the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar. The pair was sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of violating the Official Secrets Act, widely viewed as an attempt to suppress press freedom. Their case drew global condemnation, highlighting issues of media censorship and human rights in Myanmar. They were eventually released in May 2019 after a public outcry.
