National League for Democracy
The National League for Democracy (NLD) is a political party in Myanmar, co-founded by Aung San Suu Kyi in 1988. It promotes democracy and human rights in a country that has faced military rule and political repression for decades. The NLD gained significant support among citizens and won a landslide victory in the 2015 general elections, leading to a semi-democratic government. However, the military seized power again in a coup in February 2021, disrupting democratic progress and leading to widespread protests and international condemnation. The NLD continues to advocate for democracy and the protection of civil liberties in Myanmar.
