8888 Uprising

The 8888 Uprising was a peaceful pro-democracy movement in Myanmar (formerly Burma) that began on August 8, 1988. Citizens, including students, monks, and workers, protested against the military government’s oppressive rule, demanding democratic reforms and human rights. Large demonstrations took place, but the military responded with violent crackdowns, resulting in thousands of deaths and arrests. Despite the harsh response, the protests are significant in Myanmar's history, as they sparked ongoing struggles for democracy and led to the formation of opposition groups, including Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, which continued to advocate for change in the country.
