Suu Kyi's house arrest

Aung San Suu Kyi, a prominent leader and pro-democracy activist in Myanmar, was placed under house arrest for much of the last three decades due to her opposition to military rule. Her party, the National League for Democracy, won elections in 1990, but the military refused to transfer power. Following various uprisings and periods of political turmoil, she was released in 2010, but tensions continued. In February 2021, the military staged a coup, detaining her again. The international community has widely condemned her detention, seeing it as a violation of democratic principles and human rights.
