Indian Rebellion of 1857

The Indian Rebellion of 1857, also called the Sepoy Mutiny, was a widespread uprising against British rule in India. Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the British East India Company's army revolted due to cultural insensitivity, unfair treatment, and new rifle cartridges believed to be greased with animal fat, offending Hindu and Muslim beliefs. The rebellion spread to various regions, involving civilians and princely states. Although it was eventually suppressed, it marked a turning point, ending the East India Company's dominance and leading to direct British government control over India in 1858.
