1857 Indian Sepoy Mutiny
The 1857 Indian Sepoy Mutiny, also known as the First War of Indian Independence, was a major uprising against British rule in India. Triggered by widespread discontent among Indian soldiers (sepoys) over issues like cultural insensitivity, unfair treatment, and the introduction of new rifle cartridges rumored to be greased with animal fat, the rebellion spread to various regions. It involved diverse groups seeking to end British control. Although the revolt was ultimately suppressed, it marked a significant turning point, leading to changes in British governance and sowing the seeds for later nationalist movements in India.
