Revolt of 1857

The Revolt of 1857, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny, was a major uprising against British rule in India. It began when Indian soldiers, or sepoys, in the British East India Company's army protested against unfair treatment and new rifle cartridges that were rumored to be coated with animal fat, offending religious beliefs. The rebellion quickly spread, involving various groups dissatisfied with British policies. Although the uprising was suppressed after a year, it marked a significant turning point, leading to the end of Company rule and the establishment of direct British control over India in 1858, fueling a growing desire for independence.
