The Indian Mutiny
The Indian Mutiny, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny or the First War of Independence, occurred in 1857 when Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the British East India Company’s army revolted against British rule. Sparked by various grievances, including cultural insensitivity and harsh treatment, the uprising quickly spread across northern India. Although the revolt was ultimately suppressed by British forces, it marked a significant turning point, leading to the end of Company rule and the establishment of direct British control over India. The event is viewed as a key moment in India's struggle for independence.
