The Great Rebellion
The Great Rebellion, also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857, was a major uprising against British rule in India. Sparked by various grievances, including heavy taxation and cultural disrespect, Indian soldiers (sepoys) revolted due to the introduction of new rifle cartridges rumored to be greased with animal fat, which offended Hindu and Muslim beliefs. The rebellion spread across northern and central India, leading to widespread violence. Although ultimately suppressed, it marked a significant turning point in British colonial history, leading to direct British government control over India and paving the way for future independence movements.
