1857 Rebellion Narrative
The 1857 Rebellion, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny, was a major uprising against British rule in India. It began when Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the British East India Company’s army revolted due to grievances, including cultural insensitivity and exploitation. The rebellion spread across northern and central India, fueled by widespread resentment against British policies. Although ultimately suppressed, it marked a significant turning point, leading to the dissolution of the East India Company in 1874 and the establishment of direct British government control over India. The rebellion is seen as a precursor to India's struggle for independence.
