Jamindar System

The Jamindar System was a land revenue system used during British rule in India, where landowners, known as zamindars, were tasked with collecting taxes from tenants and farmers. Under this system, zamindars retained a significant portion of the revenue while paying a fixed sum to the British government. This often led to exploitation, as zamindars would charge high rents and demand payments regardless of crop yields, causing hardship for farmers. The system aimed to generate revenue but contributed to socio-economic issues, leading to agrarian distress and widespread poverty among the peasant class.
