Zamindari

Zamindari was a system of landownership and revenue collection in India during British rule, where Zamindars (landlords) acted as intermediaries between the government and farmers. Zamindars owned large tracts of land, collected taxes from tenant farmers, and often held significant social and political power. The British formalized this system through laws like the Permanent Settlement, making Zamindars responsible for revenue, which sometimes led to exploitative practices. After independence, land reform efforts aimed to abolish or reduce Zamindari holdings to distribute land more equitably among farmers.
