Abolition of Zamindari
The abolition of the Zamindari system was a major land reform in India, aimed at eliminating traditional landownership structures called Zamindars—landlords who collected taxes from farmers. Under this system, Zamindars held significant power and accumulated large landholdings, often leading to exploitation of peasants. Post-independence, government policies sought to redistribute land more fairly by transferring ownership directly to the cultivators and reducing the Zamindars’ authority. The goal was to promote equitable land distribution, reduce feudal control, and empower farmers, ultimately fostering more just and productive agricultural practices.
