William the Conqueror
William the Conqueror, originally known as William the Bastard, was the Duke of Normandy who became the first Norman King of England in 1066. He gained power after winning the Battle of Hastings, where he defeated King Harold II. This conquest marked the end of Anglo-Saxon rule in England. William implemented significant changes, including land redistribution to his supporters and the introduction of Norman culture and governance. His reign established the foundations of the English monarchy and influenced the country’s social and political landscape for centuries. His legacy includes the famous Domesday Book, a survey of England's assets.
