Development of Feudalism

Feudalism developed in Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire around the 5th century. As central authority weakened, local rulers, or lords, gained power and offered protection to peasants in return for their service and labor. This created a system where land was exchanged for loyalty and military support. Lords controlled land, while vassals were granted portions in return for service. Over time, this hierarchical structure organized society into clear roles, fostering stability in a period marked by invasions and economic decline, thus laying the groundwork for medieval life and governance.
