Security Dilemma

The security dilemma is a concept in international relations where one nation's efforts to enhance its security—such as building up its military or forming alliances—can make other nations feel threatened. In response, those nations may also increase their military capabilities, leading to an arms race. This can create a cycle of mistrust and tension, where actions taken for self-defense inadvertently escalate conflicts. Essentially, even benign intentions can provoke insecurity in others, resulting in greater instability rather than safety.
