Indian princely states
Indian princely states were semi-autonomous regions in India during British colonial rule, governed by local monarchs who maintained their titles and authority over their territories. The British established a system of indirect rule, allowing these rulers to manage internal affairs while the British controlled foreign policy and defense. After India gained independence in 1947, these states were encouraged to join either India or Pakistan. Many princely states merged into the Indian Union, reshaping the country's political landscape and contributing to its diverse cultural heritage.
