Gaekwad dynasty

The Gaekwad dynasty was a prominent Maratha princely family that ruled the Baroda State in western India, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. Founded by Chhatra Rao Gaekwad in 1720, the dynasty played a significant role in the political landscape of India. The Gaekwads were known for their progressive reforms, promoting education, infrastructure, and industry in their state. They also maintained a delicate balance of power with the British colonial authorities. The last ruler, Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, is celebrated for his modernizing efforts before the Indian independence movement reshaped the region's governance.
