princely states

Princely states were territories in India ruled by local monarchs or princes under the suzerainty or indirect control of the British Crown during colonial rule. These states had their own local governance and customs but recognized British authority in foreign policy and defense. They varied in size and power, from large kingdoms to small principalities. After India gained independence in 1947, most princely states acceded to the Indian Union, integrating into the modern nation, while a few joined Pakistan or became independent temporarily.
