Maharaja

A Maharaja is a title traditionally given to a great king or prince in India, particularly during the period of Indian monarchies. The term "Maha" means "great," and "Raja" means "king." Maharajas ruled over large territories and held significant power, wealth, and influence. They often belonged to royal families and were known for their lavish lifestyles, palaces, and patronage of the arts. Many Maharajas played important roles in India's history, especially before the country became independent in 1947, with some retaining titles and privileges even today in a ceremonial context.
