KMT (Kuomintang)

The Kuomintang (KMT), or Nationalist Party of China, was founded in 1912 with the aim of unifying China and establishing a republic. Led by Sun Yat-sen and later Chiang Kai-shek, the KMT played a significant role in the fight against warlords and Japan during the early 20th century. After losing the Chinese Civil War to the Communist Party in 1949, the KMT retreated to Taiwan, where it continued to govern. Today, the KMT remains one of Taiwan's major political parties, advocating for closer ties with mainland China while also supporting Taiwan's self-governance.
