KMT and CCP relations
The Kuomintang (KMT) and Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are two major political groups in China with a complex history. Initially allies in the early 20th century, they fought a civil war reconciling their differing ideologies—nationalism versus communism. After the Chinese Civil War, the KMT retreated to Taiwan, where it governed independently, while the CCP established the People's Republic of China on the mainland. Over time, their relationship has included periods of conflict, rivalry, limited cooperation, and ongoing political tension, especially regarding issues of sovereignty, security, and international recognition.
