Taiwan's White Terror
Taiwan's White Terror refers to a period of political repression that lasted from the late 1940s to the 1980s under the Kuomintang (KMT) government. After the Chinese Civil War, the KMT, fearing communist influences, enforced strict martial law. During this time, thousands of Taiwanese people were arrested, imprisoned, or executed for perceived political dissent. The government censored media and suppressed opposition. The term "White Terror" symbolizes the fear and violence of this era. It wasn't until the late 1980s that Taiwan began to democratize, eventually leading to a more open and free society.
