Cheng Nan-jung

Cheng Nan-jung was a Taiwanese journalist and activist known for advocating freedom of speech and democratic reform. He founded the radical magazine *Freedom Era Weekly*, which challenged government censorship and promoted political dissent during a time of strict authoritarian rule in Taiwan. Facing persecution, Cheng remained committed to his principles, risking imprisonment. In 1989, he committed self-immolation to protest government oppression and defend free expression. His sacrifice made him a symbol of Taiwan's fight for democracy and free press, inspiring ongoing efforts to uphold human rights and political openness on the island.
