Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang)
The Chinese Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang (KMT), is a political party founded in 1912. It aimed to unite China and promote nationalism, democracy, and social welfare. Under leader Sun Yat-sen, the KMT played a key role in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty. Later, Chiang Kai-shek led the party during conflicts with warlords and the Japanese, but it faced significant challenges from the Communist Party of China. After losing the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the KMT retreated to Taiwan, where it established a government that continued to promote a nationalist agenda. The KMT remains active in Taiwanese politics today.
