Islamic State (ISIS)

The Islamic State (ISIS) is a militant group that emerged in the early 2000s, aiming to establish a caliphate—an Islamic state governed by strict interpretations of Sharia law—in parts of Iraq and Syria. Known for its brutal tactics, including terrorism and violence against civilians, ISIS gained global notoriety in 2014 when it declared a caliphate. The group exploits sectarian tensions and instability to recruit followers and control territory. Although it has lost much of its territorial control since its peak, ISIS still poses a threat through its insurgent activities and ideological influence worldwide.
