Salafism
Salafism is a conservative movement within Sunni Islam that seeks to return to the beliefs and practices of the early Muslim community, particularly the first three generations of Muslims, known as the Salaf. Followers advocate for a strict interpretation of Islamic teachings and emphasize a literal understanding of the Quran and Hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad). Salafism often opposes modern interpretations of Islam, cultural practices, and innovations that it views as deviations from original teachings. While some Salafis are peaceful and engage in religious education, others may adopt militant views, leading to associations with extremism.
