The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU)

The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) is an extremist group founded in the late 1990s with the goal of establishing an Islamic state in Uzbekistan and surrounding regions. It emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union and gained followers by opposing the Uzbek government, which it saw as repressive. The IMU has conducted violent acts and has been linked to terrorism, often seeking alliances with international jihadist groups. Over time, it has lost prominence, partly due to pressure from regional governments and military operations against it, but remnants still exist and may pose security challenges.
