War of the Spanish Succession
The War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) was a major conflict in Europe over who should inherit the Spanish throne after the death of the childless Charles II of Spain. His will favored the Bourbon candidate, Philip of Anjou, alarming other European powers that feared a united France and Spain under Bourbon rule. The war involved several countries, including Britain, Austria, and the Dutch Republic, fighting against France and Spain. It ended with the Treaty of Utrecht, which maintained a balance of power by recognizing Philip as king but requiring him to renounce claims to the French crown.
