Taste perception refers to how our tongue and brain experience flavors in food and beverages. When we eat, taste buds on our tongue detect five basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami (savory). These tastes, along with our sense of smell, work together to create the overall flavor experience. When food molecules interact with taste receptors, signals are sent to the brain, allowing us to identify and enjoy different flavors. Factors like temperature, texture, and individual differences can also influence how we perceive taste, making it a complex and personal experience.
