Saltiness
Saltiness is a basic taste sensation detected by taste buds on the tongue when they interact with sodium ions, primarily from table salt (sodium chloride). These ions bind to specific receptors, triggering nerve signals that our brain interprets as the salty flavor. Saltiness helps animals and humans identify essential minerals needed for bodily functions and can enhance or balance other flavors in food. While it is a natural and important taste, excessive salt intake can have health implications, such as high blood pressure.
