Symbolism
Symbolism is an artistic movement that emphasizes representing ideas and emotions through symbols rather than direct imitation of reality (mimesis). Unlike expressionism, which focuses on conveying deep emotional experiences, symbolism seeks to evoke feelings through suggestive imagery and metaphor. For example, a dove might symbolize peace, not by depicting a peaceful scene, but by using the dove itself to convey that idea. In this way, symbolism allows artists to express complex themes and inner experiences, encouraging viewers to engage their imagination and interpret meaning beyond the surface.
