Pompey the Great

Pompey the Great was a prominent Roman general and politician during the late Republic era, known for his military successes and political alliances. Born in 106 BC, he gained fame by defeating pirates in the Mediterranean and conducting successful campaigns against rivals like Mithridates of Pontus. Alongside Julius Caesar and Crassus, he formed the First Triumvirate to consolidate power. However, tensions with Caesar eventually led to civil war. Defeated, Pompey fled to Egypt, where he was assassinated in 48 BC. His legacy is marked by his significant role in the transition from the Roman Republic to the Empire.
