Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus
Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, commonly known as Pompey the Great, was a prominent Roman military and political leader in the 1st century BCE. He earned fame through successful campaigns in the Mediterranean, notably against pirates and in establishing Roman dominance in the region. Pompey was also a key figure in Roman politics, forming the First Triumvirate with Julius Caesar and Crassus. His leadership helped shape the late Roman Republic, but he later clashed with Caesar, leading to civil war. Pompey was ultimately defeated and assassinated in 48 BCE. His career exemplifies the complex power struggles that contributed to the decline of the Roman Republic.
