ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna)

ETA, or Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, was a Basque nationalist militant group formed in 1959. Its aim was to achieve independence for the Basque Country, an area spanning parts of northern Spain and southwestern France. ETA was known for its use of violence, including bombings and assassinations, to promote its political goals, leading to significant social and political tension in Spain. Over decades, it gained notoriety for its attacks, resulting in many deaths. In 2011, ETA announced a ceasefire and in 2018 declared itself disbanded, marking the end of its violent campaign for Basque independence.
