Basque nationalist movement
The Basque nationalist movement seeks to establish greater autonomy or independence for the Basque Country, a region in northern Spain and southwestern France. It is driven by a desire to preserve and promote the unique Basque language, culture, and identity. This movement gained momentum in the 20th century, particularly with the emergence of groups like the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and the more radical ETA. While ETA was known for its violent actions, the movement now largely focuses on peaceful political processes to achieve its goals, advocating for self-determination and recognition of Basque rights within Spain and France.
