Basque Nationalism
Basque nationalism is a political and cultural movement advocating for the recognition and promotion of the Basque people’s identity, language (Euskara), and autonomy. The Basque Country, located in northern Spain and southwestern France, has a distinct culture and historical roots. Nationalists seek greater self-governance, cultural preservation, and sometimes independence from Spain and France. The movement has diverse expressions, ranging from peaceful political parties pursuing autonomy to more radical groups that have used violence. Basque nationalism reflects the broader themes of regional identity and the aspirations of communities for self-determination.
