Sabino Arana Goiri

Sabino Arana Goiri (1865-1903) was a Basque nationalist politician and writer, often regarded as the founder of Basque nationalism. His ideas promoted the distinct identity, culture, and language of the Basque people within Spain. Arana advocated for greater autonomy for the Basque Country and emphasized the importance of a unique Basque identity, which he referred to as "Euskadi." His work laid the foundation for the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), which continues to play a significant role in Basque politics today. Arana's legacy is both celebrated for fostering Basque pride and criticized for promoting ethnocentric views.
