IRA (Irish Republican Army)
The Irish Republican Army (IRA) is a paramilitary organization that emerged in the early 20th century, primarily associated with the goal of ending British rule in Northern Ireland and unifying Ireland. During the late 20th century, particularly from the 1960s to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, the IRA was involved in violent conflict known as "The Troubles," which resulted in thousands of deaths and much suffering. The organization sought to achieve its aims through armed struggle, but has also been involved in political processes. The IRA split into various factions, with some continuing armed activities while others pursued peaceful political means.
