Black and Tan

The Black and Tan refers to a historical conflict in Ireland between those who sought independence from British rule and those who remained loyal to the British government. This term is also associated with a paramilitary group known as the Black and Tans, formed during the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921). Comprised mainly of former British soldiers, they were sent to suppress the Irish nationalist movement. Their actions, often violent and brutal, left a lasting impact on Irish history and contributed to deep-seated tensions between different communities in Ireland.
