Partition of Ireland

The Partition of Ireland happened in 1920 when Ireland was divided into two separate entities: Northern Ireland, which remained part of the United Kingdom, and the Irish Free State (later Republic of Ireland), an independent nation. This division was mainly due to longstanding political and religious differences—Northern Ireland had more Protestants and wanted to stay linked to Britain, while many Catholics in Ireland sought full independence. The partition aimed to address these conflicts but also created long-lasting tensions and divisions within communities on the island.
