Provisional IRA
The Provisional Irish Republican Army (Provisional IRA) was a paramilitary organization founded in 1969, emerging from the conflict in Northern Ireland known as "The Troubles." Its main goal was to end British rule in Northern Ireland and reunify Ireland. The Provisional IRA engaged in various violent activities, including bombings and shootings, targeting British forces and perceived loyalists. While it gained support among some nationalist communities, it was also responsible for significant civilian casualties. The group declared a ceasefire in the 1990s, leading to peace negotiations that culminated in the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
