Charles II

Charles II was the king of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1660 until his death in 1685. He was the son of Charles I, who was executed during the English Civil War. After years of exile, Charles II was invited to return to the throne during the period known as the Restoration, marking the return of monarchy after the republican rule of Oliver Cromwell. His reign is noted for the flourishing of arts and culture, and the establishment of a more tolerant religious policy. Charles II was known as the "Merry Monarch" for his lively court and enjoyment of life.
